What have you done with your food scraps this week?

Integrating your meal prep with a zero food waste strategy

I think cooking from scratch is the answer to reducing so many excessive, expensive, and disease-inducing factors in our lives.

I know that living a zero-waste lifestyle can be challenging in terms of making the living adjustment. Sometimes it requires a once-off financial adjustment too, such as investing in eco-friendly, energy-saving tools and equipment, and storage goods.

But it is an important step toward reducing our impact on our immediate environment, which affects our bodies and that of our kids, from the air we breathe to the foods we eat.

One way to start is by focusing on our kitchens. We often generate a lot of waste through food packaging, single-use items, and food waste.

Here’s my mini guide to beginning with some healthy meal planning, meal prep, and pantry organization. Plus, cleaning for a sustainable, zero-waste kitchen.

Plan Your Meals

Planning your meals ahead of time is one of the most effective ways to reduce food waste. By making a list of what you need before you go grocery shopping, you can avoid buying unnecessary items and reduce the risk of food spoiling before it can be eaten.

Shop in Bulk

Buying in bulk is a great way to reduce packaging waste. Many stores now offer bulk bins for grains, nuts, and other dry goods, which can be bought in reusable bags or containers. Buying in bulk can also save money in the long run.

Use Reusable Containers

Instead of using plastic bags or containers, invest in reusable containers made from glass, silicone, or stainless steel. These can be used for storing leftovers, taking snacks on the go, and packing lunches.

Compost Food Scraps

Composting food scraps reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfill. It also produces nutrient-rich soil that can be used to grow plants. You can start a compost pile in your backyard, or look for a community program.

Cook From Scratch

Cooking from scratch not only tastes better, but it also reduces packaging waste from processed foods. Cooking from scratch also allows you to control the ingredients and reduce food waste by using up ingredients that might otherwise go bad.

Use Cloth Napkins and Towels

Instead of using paper napkins and paper towels, switch to cloth napkins and towels. They can be washed and reused, reducing waste and saving money in the long run.

Avoid Single-Use Items

Avoid using single-use items such as plastic utensils, straws, and cups. Instead, use reusable alternatives made from stainless (my straws), glass, or bamboo. Bringing your reusable water bottle (my quokka bottle) or coffee cup can also reduce waste.

If you follow these simple steps, you can create a more sustainable kitchen.

Implementing a zero food waste strategy into every meal plan and meal prep activity will become easier, and more streamlined, once the habit sets in.

You'll be cleaning up your immediate environment for your family, even if that family is just you or a family of two.

And you will see that money-saving once that habit is established in your routine when you see that you're living a healthier life all around.
